The first True Light School was founded in Guangdong in 1872 by Miss Harriet Noyes, a missionary of the American Presbyterian Church. It was one of the first colleges for women in South China .

In 1935, a branch primary school with kindergarten was established in Hong Kong . In 1947, a secondary school section was added and the name registered in 1948 as True Light Middle School of Hong Kong . When the Hong Kong government granted the school a piece of land on Tai Hang Road in 1950, a brand new school building was constructed to accommodate students from kindergarten to the secondary school levels. Since then, more and more buildings and facilities have been added to provide an excellent learning environment for students.

The school shifted from being a private school to being a fully government-aided school in 1978, with students being allocated by the Education Department.

A commercial section was added to the school in 1988, making it one of the few schools in Hong Kong that consist of four school sections: the kindergarten, the primary school, the secondary school, and the commercial section.

Following government regulations in 1998, the school adopted English as the medium of instruction.

The motto of the school was derived from the Chinese translation of the biblical phrase: 'Thou art the Light of the world' (Matthew 5:14).

We hope our students can become 'True Light of the World' - the future light-bearers and seed-sowers of the Christian faith.
